I find it analytically useful to distinguish two groups of factors which explain the differences in the long-run economic growth: the systematic forces and the growth breakdowns caused by various shocks.
The systematic forces – at the deeper level – can be divided into the innovation-based and situation-specific ones. The former are potentially universal and long-lasting, the latter are always transitional and depend on the initial conditions. The conventional literature on economic growth neglects the impact of the growth-breakdowns, while they are empirically very important. The frequency and magnitude of the underlying shocks depend very strongly on the country’s institutional system.
